Our Sculpture Club gives children the exciting opportunity to create their own three-dimensional sculpture from scratch, learning how an idea can be transformed into a finished piece of artwork.
Children will work through the creative process step by step, starting with an idea and a mesh base or armature, building up their sculpture using Plaster of Paris, allowing it to dry and then finishing it with colour and detail through painting.
This is a fantastic hands-on project that combines art, design, creativity, construction and problem-solving.
🗿 What will we be creating?
Children will have the opportunity to design and create their own individual sculpture. Depending on their interests, creations could include:

The emphasis is on individual creativity, allowing children to choose what they would like to make and develop their own design.
👐 From idea to finished sculpture
Children will work through a series of stages:
1. 💡 Idea and Design
Children will develop an idea for their sculpture and create simple sketches or plans. They will think about the shape, size, proportions and features they want to include.
2. 🧱 Building the Mesh Base
Children will create or work with a suitable mesh base/armature to provide the structure for their sculpture. They will learn how an internal framework helps support a three-dimensional artwork.
3. 👐 Applying Plaster of Paris
Children will learn how to safely work with Plaster of Paris, building up layers over the mesh base to create the shape and form of their sculpture.
4. 🗿 Developing the Form
Once the basic structure has been created, children can add details and textures to bring their sculpture to life.
5. ⏳ Drying and Preparing
The sculpture will need appropriate drying time before the final stage. Children will learn why materials need time to set and harden.
6. 🎨 Painting and Decorating
Once dry, children will paint their sculpture, choosing colours and techniques to create their desired finished effect.
7. ⭐ Finishing Touches
Children can add final details and carefully evaluate their completed sculpture.

📚 What learning takes place?
Sculpture Club provides valuable learning opportunities across art, design, construction and practical skills.
Children will learn about three-dimensional form, exploring concepts such as shape, structure, texture, proportion, balance and volume.
They will develop an understanding of how a sculpture can be constructed using an internal armature or mesh framework and how materials can be built up to create different forms.
Working with Plaster of Paris provides children with an introduction to the properties of a material that changes from a workable mixture into a hard solid. They will learn the importance of following instructions, working carefully and allowing materials sufficient time to set.
Children will develop problem-solving skills as they work out how to create and support different shapes. They may need to adapt their design if something doesn't work as expected.
The painting stage allows children to explore colour, tone, pattern, texture and artistic expression, while encouraging them to make independent creative choices.
The complete project also develops planning, organisation, concentration and perseverance, as children work through several stages before seeing their finished creation.
🎨 Create it from the ground up!
Sculpture Club gives children the chance to experience the excitement of creating a genuine three-dimensional artwork from their own idea. From designing the initial concept and building the mesh base, through to applying Plaster of Paris and painting the finished sculpture, children will see their ideas gradually become reality.
💷 Fee: Block bookings are £6.25 per week or ad-hoc bookings are £7.00 per session
📌 Spaces: Limited spaces available – early booking is recommended.
Activities will be age-appropriate and fully supervised. Plaster of Paris will be handled using suitable safety procedures, and children will receive clear instructions on the safe use of all materials and equipment. Projects may take several sessions to complete due to drying times.
