Our Key Stage 1 Planting After School Club is a fun, hands-on gardening club designed especially for children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2.
Children will have the opportunity to explore the natural world, get their hands dirty and discover how plants grow. Through simple, age-appropriate planting and gardening activities, children will learn about seeds, plants, flowers, vegetables and the wildlife that lives in our gardens.
The club encourages children to explore, investigate and learn through practical activities while developing confidence and independence.
ðž What gardening activities might we do?
Activities will vary throughout the year and may include:
ðą Planting seeds and watching them grow.
ðŠī Planting flowers in pots and containers.
ðŧ Growing sunflowers and other colourful flowers.
ðĨ Planting and growing vegetables.
ðŋ Growing herbs and exploring their different smells.
ð§ Watering plants and learning how to care for them.
ðą Potting up seedlings as they get bigger.
ðž Creating mini flower gardens.
ðŦ Seed investigation â looking closely at different types of seeds.
ð Garden discovery walks to look for plants and insects.
ð Learning about bees, butterflies and other garden creatures.
ð Making simple bug hotels.
ðĶ Making bird feeders.
ð Collecting leaves and natural materials for creative activities.
ðĻ Decorating plant pots and garden signs.
âŧïļ Exploring composting and recycling.
ðĶïļ Learning about the seasons and how they affect plants.
ðą Harvesting herbs, vegetables or flowers when they are ready.
Activities will be carefully selected to suit younger children and will change with the seasons.

ð What learning takes place?
Planting Club provides lots of opportunities for early years and Key Stage 1 learning through practical, hands-on experiences.
Children will learn about the plant life cycle and discover what plants need to grow, including water, light, warmth and healthy soil. They will learn that seeds grow into plants and that plants change as they develop.
Gardening activities introduce children to early science skills, including observing, investigating, comparing and describing what they see. Children can watch how their plants change from week to week and talk about what they notice.
There are also opportunities to develop early maths skills, such as counting seeds, comparing the sizes of plants, sorting different seeds and measuring growth.
Children will develop their language and communication skills by learning new words such as seed, root, stem, leaf, flower, soil and grow, and by talking about their observations and experiences.
The club also supports personal and social development, encouraging children to take turns, share resources, work together, follow instructions and care for living things.

Our Key Stage 1 Planting After School Club is a wonderful opportunity for younger children to explore nature, learn where plants come from and experience the excitement of growing something themselves.
ð§ð§ Age group: Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 only
ð· Fee: Block bookings are ÂĢ6.25 per week or ad- hoc bookings are ÂĢ7.00 per session.
ð Spaces: Limited spaces available â early booking is recommended.
Activities will vary according to the season, weather and what is growing in the garden. Children should wear suitable clothing and footwear for outdoor gardening activities.
