📚 What learning takes place?

Board games provide children with opportunities to develop a wide range of mathematical, cognitive, social and communication skills.

Many games involve counting, adding scores, recognising numbers, comparing quantities and understanding sequences, providing opportunities to develop numeracy and mathematical thinking.

Strategy games encourage children to plan ahead, consider different options, predict possible outcomes and make decisions. Children learn that their choices can affect what happens next.

Puzzle and logic games develop critical thinking, reasoning and problem-solving skills, encouraging children to look for patterns, clues and solutions.

Children also develop memory and concentration by remembering rules, game positions, strategies and information.

Playing with others supports important social and emotional skills. Children learn to take turns, wait patiently, communicate their ideas, follow agreed rules and respect other players.

The club also provides opportunities to develop resilience and sportsmanship. Children learn how to manage the excitement of winning and the disappointment of losing, and understand that mistakes and setbacks are part of learning.

🎨 Create Your Own Board Game

For an extra creative challenge, children may have the opportunity to design their own board game.

They could:

  • Design the board.

  • Create playing pieces.

  • Write instructions.

  • Develop game rules.

  • Create question or challenge cards.

  • Decide how players win.

  • Test their game with others.

  • Make improvements based on feedback.

This combines art, literacy, design, maths, problem-solving and teamwork in one exciting activity.
